3½x5¼. Ch[rist] Ch[urch] Oxford, 1887 December 16. To Miss Smith. In full: "I write on
behalf of Mr. Bayne, who is too unwell just now to attend to the matter on which you
wrote, & begs (with thanks for your letter) that you will kindly let it stand over for the
present." A mathematics teacher at Christ Church, DODGSON published his fantasy
masterpiece, Alice in Wonderland, under the pen name LEWIS CARROLL in 1865. He
authored its sequel, Through the Looking Glass, in 1871 and wrote the nonsense poem, The
Hunting of the Snark (1876) in addition to penning serious works, including Euclid and His
Modern Rivals (1879). THOMAS VERE BAYNE, Dodgson's oldest friend, was a fellow
don at Christ Church. Both clerics were undergraduates at Christ Church and performed duties
as Curator of the Common Room at the Church, and Bayne witnessed Dodgson's will. Lightly
penned, but legible. Lightly soiled at upper blank margin. Small chip in top front of frame. Fine
condition. Framed to an overall size of 31½x23½.
