CHARLES L. DODGSON (LEWIS CARROLL). ALS: "C. L Dodgson", 1p, 3½x5¼. Ch[rist] Ch[urch] Oxford, 1887 December 16. To Miss Smith. In full: "I write on behalf of Mr. Bayne, who is too unwell just now to attend to the matter on which you wrote, & begs (with thanks for your letter) that you will kindly let it stand over for the present." A mathematics teacher at Christ Church, DODGSON published his fantasy masterpiece, Alice in Wonderland, under the pen name LEWIS CARROLL in 1865. He authored its sequel, Through the Looking Glass, in 1871 and wrote the nonsense poem, The Hunting of the Snark (1876) in addition to penning serious works, including Euclid and His Modern Rivals (1879). THOMAS VERE BAYNE, Dodgson's oldest friend, was a fellow don at Christ Church. Both clerics were undergraduates at Christ Church and performed duties as Curator of the Common Room at the Church, and Bayne witnessed Dodgson's will. Lightly penned, but legible. Lightly soiled at upper blank margin. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 31½x23½.
