British poet, novelist, scientist and traveler Charles Montagu Doughty (1843-1926) is best known for his travels in Arabia, captured in his classic work, Travels in Arabia Deserta, which a fellow countryman, T.E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") called "a great record of adventure and travel (perhaps the greatest in our language)". Doughty also wrote the epic poem, "The Dawn in Britain" (1906, six volumes), as well as "Adam Cast Forth" (1908), "Under Arms" (1910), "The Clouds" (1912) and "The Titans" (1916). His daughters, Dorothy and Freda, were noted for their detailed sculptures of birds and children at play. Covers are soiled, front cover is lightly curled at right portion.
