CHARLES M. MATHIAS, JR.
Charles M. Mathias, Jr. signed this letter, typed on U. S. Senate stationery, to a constituent in 1969. It accompanied a copy of a letter that he sent the recipient a month earlier without a signature.
Typed letter signed "Charles Mcc. Mathias Jr." as a United States Senator.1 page, 8x10½, on stationery of the U. S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary. March 21, 1969. Addressed to Carson C. Hathaway, Silver Spring, Maryland. In full: "Dear Mr. Hathaway: I am enclosing a copy of my letter of February 25th to you, which unfortunately was forwarded to you without my signature. I regret any inconvenience it may have caused you and hope that this letter with my signature will be a satisfactory substitute. With all good wishes, Sincerely,". A maverick Republican who was known for not voting a straight Party line, Mathias (1922-2010) represented Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives (1961-1969) and U.S. Senate (1969-1987). Mathias is best known for his contribution to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, introducing legislation (along with Senator John W. Warner of Virginia) in 1979 to authorize a site of national parkland for the Memorial. Lightly toned, creased and rippled. Typewriting, but not signature, is lightly smudged but legible. Random ink stains. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
