Charles M. Mathias, Jr. signed this letter, typed on his personalized
U. S. Senate stationery, to one of his constituents on her 90th birthday in
1972. Accompanied by original mailing envelope.
Typed letter signed "Charles Mcc. Mathis Jr" as U.S.
Senator. 1 page, 7x8¾, on Mathias' personalized U. S. Senate stationery.
Dec. 21, 1972. Addressed to Mrs. Sara Bateman, Hagerstown, Maryland.
In full: "I have learned that you are celebrating a very important and
special occasion and this note brings my warm birthday greeting as you mark your
90th milestone. I hope that your day is an especially nice one for you and that
the joys of health, happiness and friendships will continue to be yours in the
years ahead." Lightly creased. Folded in half and unfolded. Lightly worn top
left corner. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Original
mailing envelope from Mathias' personalized U. S. Senate stationery.Blue
ink markes in top left corner and pencil notations on verso, both in unknown
hand.7¼x4½. Postmarked Washington, D. C., Dec. 21, 1972.
Addressed to Mrs. Sara Bateman, Hagerstown, Maryland. One color 8-cent
American flag stamp affixed. Normal postal stamps. Lightly stained and creased.
Light scratch on envelope at left edge. Adhesive residue on verso (no
show-through). Envelope is open and empty, with paper loss underneath flap and
paper residue on verso of envelope (no show-through). Otherwise in fine
condition. A maverick Republican who was known for not voting a straight
Party line, Mathias (1922-2010) represented Maryland in the U.S. House of
Representatives (1961-1969) and U.S. Senate (1969-1987). He had
previously served in the Maryland House of Delegates (1959-1960). An
attorney and veteran of World War II, Mathias had also been Assistant Attorney
General of Maryland (1953-1954) and City Attorney of Frederick, Maryland
(1954-1959). Mathias is best known for his contribution to the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial, introducing legislation (along with Senator John W.
Warner of Virginia) in 1979 to authorize a site of national parkland for the
Memorial.
