Document signed "Charles Moore" twice in blue ink. Black and blue ink
notations in unknown hand. 2 pages, 6x8½¾, 1 sheet, front and verso. With 6¼x3¼
initiation fee receipt carbon copy with perforated left edge stapled at top
edge. Jan. 16, 1964. Membership form for the American Federation of
Television and Radio Artists. American dancer Moore (1928-1986) was a
popular dancer of the 1950s and 1960s, commanding the stage with a tall,
lithe body and a clean dancing style. Long associated with New York City, he
arrived there in 1948 and studied modern and African dance and ballet under
numerous teachers, performing with Katherine Dunham's company from 1952 to 1960.
He performed in four Broadway productions, mostly musicals, between 1957 and
1970, and in two operas. An influential teacher, Moore combined Dunham's
techniques and African influences in classes at the City College of New York,
the New Dance Group and Harlem Youth Activities. In 1972, he founded Dances
and Drums of Africa, a popular dance company that toured throughout the Americas
and taught in universities until 1985. The founder of the Charles Moore
Center for Ethnic Studies in New York City,his reconstructions of
African dances were both respected and inspired similar dances in other African
dance companies in the U. S. Lightly toned and creased. Form has staple holes at
top edge. Receipt has light nicks in bottom right corner and carbon copy marks
and was folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
