CHARLES NORDHOFF
Author and journalist Charles Nordhoff wrote this letter to fellow writer Henry
Theodore Tuckerman from New York City in 1858, regarding an article that he sent to
publisher Henry Fletcher.
Autograph letter signed "Charles Nordhoff". Black ink notations on verso in unknown hand. 2
pages, 5x8, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. New York City, February 12, 1858.Addressed to
H. T. Tuckerman, Esq. In full: "Dear Sir Mr. Fletcher Harper, who has just returned after an
absence of some weeks, desires me to acknowledge the recpt. of your favor of Jan. 27th, and to day
[sic] in reply that we have no cuts in hand - so far as we know at this instant- on 'Ears' or 'noses';
but that he would be pleased the articles you speak of, [illegible] subject, when you have them.The proof you [illegible] will be sent as you direct. I do not at this moment know if the article goes
in the april [illegible] No. Mr Harper's thanks for the [paragraph symbol]s you enclosed. I am
Yours very truly". HENRY THEODORE TUCKERMAN (1813-1871) was an American
author, poet and literary critic. American publicist FLETCHER HARPER (1806-1877)
co-founded Harper and Brothers Publishing with his brothers James, Joseph and John.
Harper and Brothers Publishing is now HarperCollins, one of the largest publishers in
the world. Fletcher was also the editor of Harper's Weekly. Prussian-born author and
journalist CHARLES NORDHOFF (1887-1947) wrote numerous books on American
politics and his numerous sea voyages between 1855 and 1888. His family emigrated to
Missouri in 1834 and, after the death of his father, moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1844 to
become a journalist. Nordhoff gave temporarily gave up journalism in 1845 and spent the
next eight years in the U. S. Navy and various merchant, fishing and whaling vessels (he
was reportedly a member of the USS Columbus when it stopped in Japan in 1846, the first
American man-o-war to lie in a Japanese port). Nordhoff gave up the sailing life in 1853 and
resumed his journalism career at newspapers like the Philadelphia Register, Indianapolis
Sentinel, New York Evening Post and Herald; he also wrote for Harper's in 1861. His best
known books include Communistic Societies of The United States(1875), which he wrote
after touring communal societies like the Shakers and the Amana Colonies of Iowa; and the
popular tour guide California for Health, Pleasure and Wellness(1871), which he wrote
after touring California and Hawaii from 1871 to 1873. Lightly toned and creased. Ink
transference with show-through, which touches signature and body of letter. Light tears in
right edge. Ink stains on verso (no show-through). Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in
fine condition.
