CHARLES "PÈRE HYACINTHE" LOYSON
Rare signature from the French preacher dated 1809, signing with his alias "Pr. Hyacinthe"
Printed card signed in ink: "Pr. Hyacinthe Loyson/New York/27 October 1809", 5x2¾. The nephew of poet Charles Loyson, Charles Loyson (1827-1912) was French preacher who was better known by his religious name Père Hyacinthe (Father Hyacinthe). He was ordained a priest in 1849, and began teaching philosophy and theology at several seminaries. It was in Lyons that he began to be noticed for his powerful speaking, drawing the attention of believers and non-believers alike, and proving to be very effective in his preaching. He was sent to Paris where it was believed he was most needed, but soon fell under criticism for his speaking of controversial subjects, and was ordered to speak on only subjects which the church deemed were "united in belief". However, he continued to speak as he chose, commenting on his belief of the goodness of other religions and his opinions on the abuse of the Catholic church. He was later excommunicated. Despite his excommunication, he continued to practice his faith, and traveled around the world preaching until he finally settled in Paris where he lived until his death. Toned. Corners slightly worn and creased. Stains on right margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
