CHARLES P. SKOURAS
Letter on Fox West Coast Theatres' letterhead from the middle Skouras brother and owner of 650 theatres, thanking the recipient for a copy of Courage magazine detailing his work with the Infantile Paralysis Fund. Extremely rare signature from the theatre mogul!
Typed letter signed: "Charles P. Skouras", in black ink, 8½x11. March 20, 1941. Los Angeles, California. In full: "Dear Mr. Morgan: Thanks very much for the copy of COURAGE magazine in which my photograph appeared together with a brief report of our activities in Southern California in behalf of the Infantile Paralysis Fund. The booklet proved very interesting and you are to be complimented on the editing of same. Sincerely". Founded in 1913 by William Fox, Fox Studios merged in 1935 with Twentieth Century Pictures (founded in 1933 by Darryl F. Zanuck), and the company became 20th Century Fox. Charles P. Skouras (1889-1954), who began life as a poor Greek shepherd, was one of three brothers who came to the United States in the early 1900s. The brothers built what became a network and empire of theaters; creating a built-in franchise distribution system for films. Brother Charles became owner of National Theatres, Inc., owning over 650 theatres across the US, eventually merging with Fox to become Fox West Coast Theatres. His brother Spyros stayed at the helm of Twentieth Century Fox for 20 years, introducing CinemaScope and overseeing the production of epics such as Cleopatra (1963). The oldest brother, George, became head of United Artists Inc. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly toned. Staining on top and left margin from adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
