CHARLES PIERCE
Drama Desk Award-nominated female impersonator Charles Pierce signed this typed letter to comedienne Phyllis Diller on his personalized stationery in 1994 to thank her for a photo of "a memorable, fun evening!".
Typed letter signed: "Charles", 1p, 8½x11, on personalized stationery. Nov. 16, 1994. In full: "Dear Phyllis, Thanks so much for the photo. It was a memorable, fun evening! I snapped away myself and here are a few shots to add to your album [not included]. Hugs,". PHYLLIS DILLER, born Phyllis Ada Driver in Lima, Ohio in 1917, is known for her outrageous appearance, zany outfits, distinctive laugh and a stand-up act that featured frequent references to her fictional husband "Fang" and zingers about her sex appeal and numerous plastic surgeries.Actor, radio announcer and nightclub performer CHARLES PIERCE (1926-1999) was best known as a female impersonator. Targets of his irreverent impressions included Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Carol Channing, Katharine Hepburn, and even "Mrs. Olsen" of the Folgers coffee commercials. He received two Drama Desk Award nominations - one for Outstanding Actor in a Musical and one for Unique Theatrical Experience - for his off-Broadway show The Charles Pierce Show (1974-1975). Pierce also appeared in 15 movies and TV movies between 1975 and 1991; his female roles included the "Queen of England" - no, really, that was his role - in Rabbit Test (1978), a bag lady in an episode of Fame (1983), Bertha Venation on Torch Song Trilogy (1988) and Granny Greenberg on Spies and Lovers (1988), as well as the dual role of Charley and Bette Davis in an episode of Madame's Place (1982).
