CHARLES RANN KENNEDY
He declines to receive copies of his books for autographing, since he
is packing to move from New York to California.
Autograph Letter signed: "Charles Rann Kennedy", 1 page,
6¼x9½. Millbrook, New York, 1940 July 2. On letterhead of Bennett Junior
College to E. Ording, New York City. In full: "As I am in the process
of packing up all my earthly goods for California, I am sure it would be unsafe
to trust your books to me; but if you will let me know which books (and
editions) of mine you have, I'll be happy to jot down autographed quotations for
each book, which you can paste in the books, yourself. I hope this will do, and
ever so many thanks for your kind words. If, in this clutter, we come across a
photograph, we will send it to you also. Yours very sincerely". Charles
Rann Kennedy (1871-1950), the grandson of the English legal and classical
scholar of the same name, became an actor, press agent and theatrical business
manager before finding his calling as a writer. He published short stories,
essays and poems, but is best known for his plays, beginning with his first
success, The Servant in the House (1908). His plays were all dramas with
serious social themes. Kennedy was married from 1898 to actress Edith
Wynne Matthison, who appeared in several of his plays and advised him on
their development. Both Kennedy and Matthison taught at Bennett Junior College
in Millbrook, New York. Multiple folds. Light surface creases. Corners slightly
worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
