CHARLES RAY. Typed Letter signed: "Charles Ray", 1 p,
7¼x10½. On letterhead of Ince Features. No place, 1917 April 15. To Miss
Gladys Calvert. In full: "I have appreciated very much your kind
interest in the pictures in which I have appeared. Probably not since the
'Coward' have I had such an opportunity as is afforded in my new forthcoming
release, a comedy drama entitled 'The Pinch Hitter.' My only hope is that you
will enjoy it as much as I did in the making. You and your friends can inquire
of your theatre manager, who shows Triangle plays, when this feature will be
played in your vicinity. Sincerely yours." Popular silent film star Ray
(1891-1943) usually played a shy, naïve country boy who learned to cope with
city slickers. Ray had his greatest success while working for the films
studio of Thomas Ince (1913-1920). Starring vehicles there included The
Coward, a Civil War drama of 1913, and The Pinch Hitter, a 1917 film
featuring college baseball heroics. An unsuccessful effort to found his own
studio bankrupted him and ruined his movie career. He played only supporting
roles in talking pictures. Lightly creased. Staple holes at top center. Pinhead
sized file holes near left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
