Autograph Sentiment Signed: "Yrs. affect./ Charles Reade" in black ink. 5¼x1½ affixed to 5½x2 piece of brown cardstock. English novelist Charles Reade (1814-1884) was born in Ipsden, Oxfordshire. He studied at Magdalen College in Oxford receiving his B.A. in 1835 and began his writing career as a dramatist, creating several plays during the early 1950's like The Ladies Battle (1851), The Lost Husband (1852) and Gold (1853). His 1856 novel It is Never Too late to Mend gained a positive response and he soon published several more novels The Course of True Love Never Did Run Smooth (1857), White Lies (1857), Jack of all Trades (1858), The Autobiography of a Thief (1858) and Love Me Little, Love Me Long (1859). One of England's most popular and highest paid novelists, Reade's most famous work The Cloister and the Hearth (1861) still remains a very successful historical novel. Some of his other well-known works include Hard Cash (1863), Griffith Gaunt (1866), Foul Play (1869), A Terrible Temptation (1871), and A Women Hater (1877). Irregularly cut. Normal mailing folds.
