Trading card signed: "Charles S. Dutton", in black ink, 2½x3½. Playbill trading card for a production of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. An actor with an inspiring story, Charles S. Dutton (b. 1951) started life off rough, being sent to prison at the age of 17 after the death of a man Dutton was said to have fought in self-defense. In prison, Dutton had a stint in solitary confinement, where he passed the time by reading an anthology of black playwrights. He became passionate for acting and drama, and upon his release, enrolled as a drama major at Towson State University. His Broadway debut was in the play Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (1984), a role which earned him a Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination for best actor. His short career on Broadway made a big impact, and he went on to work in film and screen, having his own television series, Roc (1991), and co-starring in Alien 3 (1992). Dutton worked as a director for the mini-series The Corner (2000), with the mini-series winning several Emmys. Fine condition.
