CHARLES S. "GENERAL TOM THUMB" STRATTON, CO-SIGNED BY: LAVINIA "MRS. TOM THUMB" STRATTON
This slip of paper was signed by Stratton with both his stage name "Genl Tom Thumb" and birth name and by his wife Lavinia "Mrs Charles S Stratton" in 1878.
Signatures: "Charles S. Stratton/known as/Genl Tom Thumb" by Charles Stratton and "Mrs. Charles S. Stratton/Oct. 14th 1878" by his wife Lavinia. 6¼x2¾. Stratton (1838-1883, born in Bridgeport, Connecticut) was normally proportioned but only 2 feet tall. Aggressively promoted by circus showman P. T. Barnum as a curiosity under the name Tom Thumb, he developed the skills of an entertainer. His marriage to Lavinia Warren in 1863 was attended by over 2,000 guests, who were greeted by the bride and groom standing atop a piano. Tom Thumb and his wife were received by many prominent heads of state, including Presidents Polk and Lincoln, Queen Victoria, and France's Emperor Napoleon III. Encapsulated in a plastic case. Lightly toned, otherwise in fine condition.
