Photograph signed: "Charles Sawyer", in black ink, b/w, 8x10. Charles W. Sawyer (1887-1979), the former Lieutenant Governor of Ohio (1933-1935), was Secretary of Commerce from 1948 to 1953. He implemented Truman's controversial seizure of the strike-threatened steel industry on grounds of military necessity (supplying U.S. forces in the Korean War). Sawyer was also the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium from 1944 to1946. In 1968, he published his book Concerns of a Conservative Democrat. Fine condition.
