Signature: "Charles Sawyer" as Secretary of Commerce, 5x8 Printed biography on verso. Charles W. Sawyer (1887-1979), a former Lieutenant Governor of Ohio (1933-1935), was Secretary of Commerce from 1948 to 1953. He implemented Truman's controversial seizure of the strike-threatened steel industry on grounds of military necessity (supplying U.S. forces in the Korean War). Sawyer was also the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium from 1944 to 1946. In 1968, he published his book Concerns of a Conservative Democrat. From the private collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009). Ward, a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Multiple mailing folds. Adhesives residue on verso (show through). Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
