verso). 6¼x5¼. English conductor Charles Shadwell (1898-1979) founded the Cambridge
Concert Orchestra, and conducted the BBC Variety Orchestra for over 30 years
(1936-1967). The BBC Variety Orchestra performed swing and pop music, including many
of Shadwell's own arrangements. His four daughters all went into show business. He can be
seen with daughter Joan Winters in the film Variety Jubilee (1943). Doris Arnold
(1929-1969) was a notable BBC Radio producer and pianist, becoming one of the first female
disc jockies in the United Kingdom. She went on to arrange music for and appear in television
productions, including The White Coons Concert Party (1937) and The Kentucky
Minstrels (1948). Robert McDermott (1908-1964) was a jack-of-all-trades showman and
producer who held various positions as an employee of the BBC. He appeared in several
films as an actor, including Play the Game (1947) and Night and Day (1945). He served as
a BBC executive and creative designer for many years across mediums including radio and the
