Signature: "Chas. Stewart/ Houston/ Texas" in black ink. 7x3 clipping. Charles Stewart (1836-1895) was a United States Representative from Texas. After studying law, Stewart served as prosecuting attorney for the thirteenth judicial district (1856-1860), and served as a delegate to the secession convention in 1861. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Stewart enlisted in the Confederate Army, first in the Tenth Regiment of Texas Infantry and later in Colonel Baylor's Cavalry. After the war he served as city attorney of Houston (1874-1876) and then as a member of the Texas Senate (1878-1882). In 1883 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, a position he held for five terms. Irregularly cut. Toned. Small pinpoint stains throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
