Charles Sumner signs an autograph card.
Printed card signed in ink: "Charles Sumner/Senate Chamber/26th March 69", 5x2¼ autograph card. Charles Sumner (1811-1874), one of the leading opponents of slavery in Congress and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs (1861-1871), served as a Republican in the U.S. Senate representing Massachusetts from 1851 to his death. On May 22, 1856, because of Sumner's scathing attacks on slavery and its defenders, South Carolina Congressman Preston S. Brooks physically attacked Sumner as he was in his seat in the Senate Chamber, inflicting injuries from which he never fully recovered. Sumner did not return to his seat for three and a half years. Fine condition.
