[probably Mary Elizabeth Fiske Sargent], in full: "I beg leave to
return you, the Radical Club and the president with many thanks. Also again I
wish to say that I am in your debt for a charming [?] and day - which I
shall be ready to reciprocate whenever I can and particularly whenever my
'[illegible]' goes in the neighborhood of Utah! I foresee that
that is what we are to come to. When I do I hope you will go too. Yours
truly". Charles Wyllys Elliott (1817-1883) was a prolific author,
writing on history, travel, interior design, and even the supernatural. He
also published several novels under the pseudonym "Thorn White." The
Radical Club of Boston (1867-1880) was a discussion group attended by the
Massachusetts literary and intellectual elite, hosted by Unitarian minister
John Turner Sargent. His wife, Mary Elizabeth Fiske Sargent (1827-1904) was the
principal organizer of the meetings, arranging speakers and invitations.
