CHARLEY WINNER
The professional football coach, who was the protégée and son-in-law
of the legendary Weeb Ewbank, signs his name in blue ink
Signature: "Charley Winner" in blue ink. 5x3 card, with 1x1
photo of the coach affixed in the bottom right corner. Charley Winner (b.
1924) was a football coach, best known for his intertwined personal and
professional life alongside football coach Weeb Ewbank. After serving during
WWII in the Air Force, during which he flew 17 missions and spent six weeks in a
German POW camp, Winner played running back for Washington University in St.
Louis, where Ewbank was serving as head coach; after Ewbank left to coach the
Cleveland Browns, Winner took a position as an assistant coach with nearby Case
Tech and worked as a Browns' scout, later in 1950 marrying Ewbank's
daughter. Winner continued to follow his father-in-law, serving as his
assistant coach to the Baltimore Colts, and eventually coaching his own team,
the St. Louis Cardinals from 1966 to 1971. He continued work as an assistant
coach for teams such as the Redskins, the Bengals, the Dophins, and again under
Ewbank for the New York Jets. His total Win-Loss record is 44-44-5, winning .500
