CHARLIE AGNEW
The big band conductor poses with his baton.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Gene/Good luck ole boy/Thanks for the/Co-operation/Its (sic) been swell/Charlie/Agnew." Sepiatone, 8x10. Photograph by Maurice Seymour, Chicago (stamped at lower right and imprinted on verso). Charlie Agnew (1901-1978) worked with several bands in the Chicago area before forming his own group, the Charlie Agnew Orchestra, in 1924. In addition to the orchestra's following in the mid-West, Agnew found a wider audience with his own radio shows, which included The Armandes Face Cream Program and The Lucky Strike Magic Carpet. In the 1940s, he and his orchestra played an extended run at the newly opened El Rancho in Las Vegas. Around that time, Agnew also signed a recording contract, with many of the cuts featuring the vocals of Jeanne Carroll. The popular bandleader also penned a number of songs, including "Too Many On My Mind", "Fools in Love" and his theme song, "Slow But Sure". Lightly creased and soiled at blank margins and corners. Surface creased, touching hair. No show through of stamp on verso. Overall, fine condition.
