CHARLIE BARNET
The composer and bandleader signs his name with "Best Wishes"
Autograph sentiment signed: "Best Wishes/Charlie Barnet", in
black ink, 6x4½. Affixed is an unsigned magazine photograph. Jazz saxophonist,
composer and band leader Charlie Barnet (1913-1991) began recording in
1933, and peaked in popularity in the years following release of his
composition "Cherokee" (1939). Other Barnet hits included "Skyliner" and
"Scotch and Soda." Barnet led a swing band, switching to a bebop style after
1947. An admirer of Basie and Ellington, Barnet was the first major band
leader to integrate. He openly ridiculed the "sweet band" sound of some
rival bands. Some band leaders like Glenn Miller imposed strict discipline, but
Barnet's was known as a party band. He retired - wealthy - in 1949. Top right
corner creased. Heavy surface creases. Slightly soiled. Left edge frayed and
irregularly torn. Otherwise, fine condition.
