CHARLIE BARNET
Inscribed and signed photo, wearing a tux
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Chares Silvia /Best Wishes/Charlie
Barnet". B/w, 8x10. Captioned in lower margin. Jazz saxophonist, composer
and band leader Charlie Barnet (1913-1991) began recording in 1933, and
peaked in popularity in the years following release of his composition
"Cherokee" (1939). Other Barnet hits included "Skyliner" and "Scotch and
Soda." Barnet led a swing band, switching to a bebop style after 1947. An
admirer of Basie and Ellington, Barnet was the first major band leader to
integrate. He openly ridiculed the "sweet band" sound of some rival bands.
Some band leaders like Glenn Miller imposed strict discipline, but Barnet's was
known as a party band. He retired - wealthy - in 1949. Lightly creased at
corners. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso with minor show-through at upper
right margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
