Signature: “Charlie”, in blue ink, 5¾x2½. Stamp on right-hand side: “Charlie Chester/ A circle
of friends/ (image of interlocking rings)/ with a ring of sincerity/ Radio soapbox”. Charlie
Chester (1914-1997) discovered he possessed the gift of gab while working as a traveling
salesman. He eventually became one of the more popular British comedians from the
1940s. Chester had a long series of radio shows, from Stand Easy to Sunday Soapbox, as well
as a special program, Charlie Chester on Laugh Duty, that was broadcast to British military
personnel around the world. On television, he hosted The Charlie Chester Show, featuring
characters of his own creation like Whippit Kwik the Cat Burglar. He also hosted Britain's
