CHARLIE GEHRINGER AND SAM RICE
American League adversaries in the 1920s meet in 1965.
Original Photograph signed: "Chas. Gehringer" and "'Sam' Rice". B/w, 5¾x3½ overall, image 5¼x3 (one surface). Identified on verso in unknown hand: "July 26, 1965/Doubleday Field". MLB Hall of Famer CHARLIE GEHRINGER (1903-1993) was the American League MVP in 1937. He had 200 or more hits seven times, hit at least .300 fourteen times and had at least 100 RBI seven times. Gehringer hit .320 lifetime and .321 in twenty World Series games. One of baseball's most sure-handed second basemen and a dependable hitter, the taciturn and undemonstrative Gehringer was called "The Mechanical Man". He spent his entire 19-season career with the Detroit Tigers (1924-1942) and earned six straight All-Star selections from 1933 to 1938. Eight years after his retirement, the Detroit Tigers hired Gehringer to be the team's general manager. He remained with the organization in various positions throughout the 1950s. SAM RICE (1890-1974) played the outfield for the Washington Senators from 1915-1933, closing his career with the Cleveland Indians in 1934. With a .322 lifetime batting average, he was one of baseball's greatest singles hitters. Both are Baseball Hall of Famers and this photograph was taken during the 1965 Hall of Fame induction weekend at Cooperstown. Minor surface scratches and creases (not evident head on). Impressions of notes (unknown hand) on verso lightly show through at upper background (not evident head on). Otherwise, fine condition.
