CHARLIE GRIMM Shown as a sports broadcaster in a vintage studio photo Photograph inscribed and signed: "Best Wishes/to a Great/Guy 'Ernie'/Charlie Grimm". B/w, 8x10. Photo: Maurice Seymour Studio (Chicago). Charlie Grimm (1898-1983) was an ebullient, fun-loving fellow who frolicked through 20 seasons as a player. He was also a tolerant manager who could coax career-best performances from mediocre players and gave free rein to his stars. Grimm was the most skillful first baseman of his era. He won nine fielding titles wearing a small mitt and ranging wide of the bag. He had a 23-game hitting streak in 1923. Grimm managed the Cubs (1932-1938, 1944-1949, 1960), winning four NL pennants. In between, he managed the Braves (1952-1956). In the 1940s he was a play by play announcer for Chicago's WBBM Radio, as shown here. After his death, his widow was allowed to scatter his ashes over Wrigley Field. Creased and worn near edges. Mounting residue on verso (no show though). Otherwise, fine condition.
