CHARLOTTE ROTHSCHILD. Third-Person ALS: "Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild" and "Baroness C de Rothschild" in text, 1½p, 5½x8, front and verso. The Hague, 1843 June 15. Integral address leaf addressed by Rothschild to: "Messrs. Miles & Edwards/[illegible] Street/London". In full: "Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild requests to know if Messrs. Miles & Edwards can procure for her six pieces of green damask, six of red, & two of White & other damask, of the pattern she saw & approved when lately in London (neither the basket nor pine apple (sic) pattern) and if they can be procured to be sent by steamer which leaves London the 21st of June directed to Messrs. Esechius & Sons Rotterdam who will have received directions to forward them - these 14 pieces must not amount to more than 6£ the piece, & are instead of the 10 green, the Baroness commissions Mess Miles to procure for her - she requests an answer. May be addressed to her by return of post directed to Baroness C de Rothschild at the Hague." Charlotte (1825-1899), of the Naples branch of the Rothschild banking family, married her cousin, Lionel (1808-1879), the eldest son of Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836) of the London branch, in 1842. Charlotte, who was well educated and could read and converse in several languages, had four children and was involved in charitable affairs and Victorian social life (she and her husband were frequent guests at the court of Queen Victoria). In 1858, her husband became the first Jewish member of Britain's House of Commons. Lightly creased with folds, light vertical folds touch the "te" of Charlotte and the "hs" of Rothschild on first page. Ink notes (unknown hand) at upper left margin of first page, docketed (unknown hand) at upper margin of address leaf. 1x½-inch paper loss on address leaf from removal of red wax seal, 2 nailhead-size holes at blank areas on address leaf. Another hole touches letter at the date on second signature page. Nicked at upper blank edge at mid-vertical fold. Glue stains and postal markings on address leaf show through to blank integral leaf.
