Charlotte Shaw wrote this letter on letterhead of her husband, playwright George Bernard Shaw, in 1907 regarding a question about an essay from the Fabian Society, to which she and her husband both belonged.
Autograph letter signed "C. F. Shaw". 2 pages, 7x4½, 1 sheet, on George Bernard Shaw's letterhead. Feb. 17, 1907. Addressee is illegible. In full: "Dear Sir Mr. Bernard Shaw desires me to say that if you can get 'Fabian Essays' published by The Fabian Society 3 Clements Inn Strand W.C. you will find in that book an essay called 'The Transitive & Social Democracy' which is the paper in question. I [illegible] send you a copy of Fabian Essay if I could read your name. But I have [illegible] at it & it is a pity the book should be lost. Yours faithfully". Both Charlotte Shaw and George Bernard Shaw were members of the socialist Fabian Society.Playwright George Bernard Shaw met woman's rightist and fellow member of the socialist Fabian Society CHARLOTTE SHAW (1857-1943), born Charlotte Payne-Townsend,after she nursed him through an illness in 1898. London's Star newspaper reported their marriage later that year thusly: "As a lady and a gentleman were out driving in Charlotte Street, Covent Garden yesterday, heavy shower drove them to take shelter in the office of the Superintendent Registrar there, and in the confusion of the moment he married them." Their marriage lasted 45 years but was reportedly a celibate one; Charlotte refused to have children. Lightly toned, creased and soiled. Folded once and unfolded. Rounded corners. Otherwise in fine condition.
