Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours truly/Chauncey M. Depew", 3½x2 card. Soiled and toned. Ink lightly smudged at signature. Otherwise, fine condition. Accompanied by Invitation, unsigned, 5¼x3¼. Partly printed invitation from Depew, with particulars added in an unknown hand, inviting Mr. Jules Guthridge to meet members of New York's Congressional delegation on December 13 [1889] at the Corcoran House, Lafayette Square [Washington, D.C.]. Lightly toned at edges. Adehesive and paper residue (previous mounting) on verso. Chauncey Mitchell Depew (1834-1928) was an attorney for the Vanderbilt railroad interests and President (1885-1899) and Chairman of the Board (1899-1928) of the New York Central Railroad. He was elected New York's Secretary of State on the Union Ticket in 1864, and received 99 votes for the Presidential nomination at the 1888 Republican National Convention. He declined an offer from President Benjamin Harrison to serve as Secretary of State. From 1899-1911, he served as U.S. Senator from New York. Two items.
