In part: "This Certifies that Chauncey M. Depew is entitled to One Hundred Shares in the Wagner Palace Car Company...." The total capitalization was $12 million with each share valued at $100. The attorney for Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt's railroad interests from 1866-1899, Chauncey Depew was also President (1885-1899) and Chairman of the Board (1899-1928) of the New York Central Railroad and the Republican U.S. Senator from New York (1899-1911). The Wagner Palace Car Company began as the New York Central Sleeping Car Company. It was founded by Webster Wagner (1817-1882) in cooperation with Vanderbilt, whose New York Central Railroad was the primary user of the four original coaches. Transfer notations dated in 1889 across upper center vignette in unknown hand. Vertical folds and cancellations touch front signatures. Overall, fine condition.
