CHEECH & CHONG: RICHARD "CHEECH" MARIN AND TOMMY CHONG
Black and white movie still from Up in Smoke, one of 1978's highest-grossing movies
Photograph signed "Smoke it up!/CHONG" by Chong in blue ink and "Me to [sic]/'Cheech'" by Marin. B/w, 9½x8 overall, 9½x7 image, one surface. Paramount Pictures movie still of Up in Smoke. ©1978 Paramount Pictures Corporation. [sic]The unbelievably low-budget Up in Smoke (1978) was written by Cheech and Chong and was of their first feature movie. It surprised everyone at the box office with a United States gross box office take of $41.6 million. Together, comedians Richard "Cheech" Marin (born in Los Angeles, California in 1946) and Tommy Chong (born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1938) comprised one of the most popular comedy acts of the early to mid-1970s. Their subversive, drug-oriented and often scatological routines were particularly popular among young people and hippies. In 1978, Cheech and Chong made their feature-film debut in Up in Smoke, a comedy centered on their inane banter, the quest for good marijuana and careers as rock musicians. Their low-brow but funny antics were a hit and the film became that year's highest-grossing movie, and subsequently launched a short-lived series of similar films. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Otherwise, fine condition.
