and "&/Sonny/Bono". Color, 3½x5. Salvatore "Sonny" Bono
(1935-1998) and Cher (born Cherilyn Sarkisian in 1946) emerged as a popular
pop/rock duo with big hits such as "I Got You Babe" (1965) and "The Beat
Goes On" (1967). Inspired by the act they had developed in Las Vegas nightclubs,
the couple launched a popular television show (1971-1974). Despite a
divorce in 1974, the couple reunited on television (1976-1977), but
thereafter pursued separate careers. CHER had a successful solo
singing career, starting with the hit "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" (1971),
and her Grammy Award-winning, Believe (1999). Also a popular
concert attraction, Cher has enjoyed great success in films, winning a Best
Actress Academy Award for Moonstruck (1987) and being nominated
for the Best Actress Oscar for Silkwood (1983). Cher was also
named Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for Mask (1985).
SONNY entered politics, first winning election as Mayor of Palm
Springs, California (1988), then serving as a Republican in the U.S.
Congress from 1995 until his death in a skiing accident in 1998. Lightly
soiled. Poor contrast on Bono signature.
