SONNY and CHER. Photograph signed: "Cher" and "Hi/Sonny/Bono". B/w, 10x8 overall, image 9½x6¼ (one surface). Still from the 1985 film, Mask. ©1985, Universal City Studios, Inc. Mask told the true story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a personable young man suffering from "lionitis," a fatal disease that causes hideous facial disfigurement. Cher was named Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for Mask. SALVATORE "SONNY" BONO and CHER (born Cherilyn Sarkisian) emerged as a popular pop/rock duo with big hits such as "I Got You Babe" (1965) and "The Beat Goes On" (1967). Inspired by the act they had developed in Las Vegas nightclubs, the couple launched a popular television show (1971-1974). Despite a divorce in 1974, Sonny and Cher reunited on television (1976-1977), but thereafter pursued separate careers. Cher had a successful solo singing career, starting with the hit "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" (1971) and continuing to the present. She has also had great success in films, with a Best Actress Oscar nomination for Silkwood (1983) and a win for Moonstruck (1987). Sonny entered politics, first winning election as Mayor of Palm Springs, California (1988) and then serving as a Republican in the U.S. Congress from 1995 until his death in a skiing accident in 1998. Ink on Sonny's writing lightly beaded. Fine condition.
