CHESTER GOULD
He pens a letter of thanks for birthday wishes from a fan
Autograph Letter Signed: "Chester/Gould", 9x3½ card. Woodstock, Illinois, 1974 December 14. Begins: "Dear Me. Buchanan:" In full: "I want to thank you for inspiring letter & birthday greetings. A little pat on the back is the universal medicine that makes the world go around. Again thanks! May your Christmas & New Year bring only good things Sincerely (over) I'm sorry I have no photos of myself, but here's ole Dick, my slave-driving associate!" Colorized drawing of Gould's comic strip detective, Dick Tracy to the right. Chester Gould (1900-1985) introduced crime and violence into the comics with his creation of "Dick Tracy", the first non-humorous comic strip, which debuted in the "Detroit Mirror" on October 4, 1931. Gould drew the strip, which was praised for its realism, for 46 years, two months and 21 days before retiring on Christmas Day in 1977. Dick Tracy was a modern deductive investigator who cleverly for hunted clues, fingerprints and even footprints. Gould researched police and FBI manuals and gave true accounts of detection methods, making his character as well versed as possible. His plainclothes detective also sported snappy outfits and "modern" gadgets ahead of his time, such as a two-way wrist radio (January 21, 1946). Gould, who included a brief explanation of each of his inventions within the strip, continued to serve as a consultant to other artists on the strip until his death in 1985. Yellow stain touching two words of letter and "ster" of Chester and "ould" of Gould. Binding holes at right margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
