Gould, who had died on May 11, 1985 at the age of 84, from the May 12, 1985
issue of "The Boston Sunday Globe". Chester Gould (1900-1985) introduced
crime and violence into the comics with his creation of "Dick Tracy", the first
non-humorous comic strip, which debuted in the "Detroit Mirror" on October 4,
1931. Gould drew the strip, which was praised for its realism, for 46
years, two months and 21 days before retiring on Christmas Day in 1977.
Dick Tracy was a modern deductive investigator who cleverly for hunted clues,
fingerprints and even footprints. Gould researched police and FBI manuals and
gave true accounts of detection methods, making his character as well versed
as possible. His plainclothes detective also sported snappy outfits and "modern"
gadgets ahead of his time, such as a two-way wrist radio (January 21, 1946).
Gould, who included a brief explanation of each of his inventions within the
strip, continued to serve as a consultant to other artists on the strip until
his death in 1985. All items lightly creased and soiled. Fine condition.
