CHESTER GOULD
He inscribes his signature on a card just over five years after he retired from drawing the "Dick Tracy" comic strip
Inscribed Signature: "To/Steve Juscik/with/Best Wishes/Chester/Gould/2-4-83", 6x4 card. Signed just over five years after Gould retired from drawing the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. Chester Gould (1900-1985) introduced crime and violence into the comics with his creation of "Dick Tracy", the first non-humorous comic strip, which debuted in the "Detroit Mirror" on October 4, 1931. Gould drew the strip, which was praised for its realism, for 46 years, two months and 21 days before retiring on Christmas Day in 1977. Dick Tracy was a modern deductive investigator who cleverly for hunted clues, fingerprints and even footprints. Gould researched police and FBI manuals and gave true accounts of detection methods, making his character as well versed as possible. His plainclothes detective also sported snappy outfits and "modern" gadgets ahead of his time, such as a two-way wrist radio (January 21, 1946). Gould, who included a brief explanation of each of his inventions within the strip, continued to serve as a consultant to other artists on the strip until his death in 1985. Slightly creased. Diagonal fold touches 2 words of inscription and nicks the "C" in Chester and the flourish of the "G" of Gould. Fine condition.
