CHIEF JACK LONGHORNE
3x5 color photo, signed on verso, shown in a 1947 parade
Photograph signed on verso: "1947/Jack Longhorne/Delaware/Indian".
Color 3¼x5¼. Candid photo, taken in 1947. Jack Longhorne was a Chief of the
Delaware (Lenape) Indians, originally an important tribe but forcibly removed
westward until by 1947 they most were living in Oklahoma. A sign visible on the
parade route suggests that it took place in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, which was
the headquarters of the Delaware Nation until a controversial court ruling in
2004 withdrew recognition from the Delaware, sanctioning the tribe's absorption
into the Cherokee Nation. The life of Jack Longhorne merits further research.
Photograph age discolored and creased from writing on verso. Printing on verso
(no show-through).
