CHARLES EVANS HUGHES
Photo inscribed and signed as Secretary of State (1925), carrying a portfolio but looking sporty in white shoes, vertically striped shirt and pants, and a Panama hat.
Photograph inscribed and signed: ""Mr. George E. Durno,/with cordial regards/Feb. 24, 1925". B/w 8x10. Hughes, Governor of New York (1907-1910), was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Taft. He served from 1910 until he resigned to run for President. He was nominated at the Republican National Convention, June 7-10, 1916, in Chicago. In the November 7, 1916 election, President Wilson defeated Hughes by 9.1 million to 8.5 million popular votes, 277-254 electoral votes and 30-18 states. Early returns indicated Hughes had won California and had been elected 29th President, 267-264 electoral votes. Final returns gave the state and its 13 electoral votes to Wilson by less than 4,000 popular votes. Hughes later served as Secretary of State under Harding and Coolidge (1921-1925) and was a member of The Hague Tribunal (1926-1930). He was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by President Hoover and served from 1930-1941. When he signed this photo, Hughes was the outgoing Secretary of State, returning to private law practice ten days later (March 4) rather than continue in the Cabinet for Cooldige's new term. George E. Durno was a White House reporter for the International News Service. Toned and lightly silvered. Worn and soiled at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
