Letter from Hughes to his friend, Reverend Francis E. Clark, thanking him for his congratulations on his appointment as Secretary of State!
Typed letter signed: "Charles E. Hughes", in black ink, 7¼x9¼. July 14, 1921. Washington, D.C. In full: "My dear Dr. Clark:- I have received your letter of July 13th with it's enclosures which I have been glad to examine. I am delighted to hear that the Convention was so splendidly successful. Thanking you for your kind words concerning my appointment, and with cordial regard, I am Very sincerely yours". Charles E. Hughes (1862-1948) was Governor of New York (1907-1910) when President Taft appointed him Associate Justice. In 1916, Hughes resigned from the Supreme Court having received the Republican nomination for President; he lost to Wilson. President Harding appointed him Secretary of State in 1921, and he remained in that office when Coolidge became President in 1923, staying until 1925. When Chief Justice Taft retired in 1930 because of ill health, President Hoover appointed Hughes as Chief Justice, only the second man reappointed to the Supreme Court (the first was John Rutledge). Lightly soiled. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn and creased, with heavy crease on bottom right corner. Toned. Stray ink marks on top left corners. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
