CHARLES EVANS HUGHES
Charles E. Hughes sends a typed letter of thanks for the letter with interesting information.
Typed Letter Signed: "Charles E. Hughes" as Governor of New York, 1p, 7x10. Albany, 1910 September 6. To Miss C. E. Mason, Tarrytown-on-Hudson, New York. In full: "On returning to Albany I find your letter of the 27th ultimo with its very interesting information. I am glad you had such a profitable trip. With cordial regards, I am, Very sincerely yours," On April 25, 1910, President Taft nominated Governor Hughes to be Associate Justice of the Supreme Court; the Senate confirmed the appointment on May 2, 1910. He was commissioned that day and sworn in on October 10, 1910, five weeks after this letter was written. Charles E. Hughes was Governor of New York (1907-1910) when President Taft appointed him Associate Justice. In 1916, Hughes resigned from the Supreme Court having received the Republican nomination for President; he lost to Wilson. President Harding appointed him Secretary of State in 1921, and he remained in that office when Coolidge became President in 1923, staying until 1925. When Chief Justice Taft retired in 1930 because of ill health, President Hoover appointed Hughes as Chief Justice, only the second man reappointed to the Supreme Court (the first was John Rutledge). Hughes served until he retired in 1941. Lightly creased. Light horizontal fold just touches the tops of the "C" and "H". Mounting remnant on verso of integral leaf shows through at left blank edge. Overall, fine condition.
