CHARLES E. HUGHES
Typed letter signed from Hughes as Secretary of State introducing the
Reverend Francis E. Clark to the Diplomatic and Consular Offices of the United
States of America
Typed letter signed: "Charles E Hughes", in black ink, 7x8½.
November 20, 1923. Washington, D.C. In full: "To the Diplomatic and
Consular Officers of the United States of America. Gentlemen: I take pleasure in
introducing to you the Reverend Francis E. Clark, D.D., President of the World's
Christian Endeavor Union, who is about to proceed abroad. I cordially bespeak
for the Reverend Doctor Clark such courtesies and assistance as you may be able
to render, consistently with your official duties. I am, Gentlemen, Your
obedient servant". Charles E. Hughes (1862-1948) was Governor of
New York (1907-1910) when President Taft appointed him Associate
Justice. In 1916, Hughes resigned from the Supreme Court having received the
Republican nomination for President; he lost to Wilson. President Harding
appointed him Secretary of State in 1921, and he remained in that office when
Coolidge became President in 1923, staying until 1925. When Chief Justice
Taft retired in 1930 because of ill health, President Hoover appointed Hughes
as Chief Justice, only the second man reappointed to the Supreme Court (the
first was John Rutledge). Paper loss at bottom margin, some conflicting with
signature. Small notches to left and right edge. Normal mailing folds. Light
surface creases. Corners lightly worn and creased, with heavier creases to top
right corner. Lightly soiled. Normal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
