EARL WARREN
Supreme Court Justice signs copy of the Gettysburg Address
Typescript signed: "Earl Warren" as Governor of California, 1p, 6¼x9. No place, 1948 July 6. Warren has signed beneath the text of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. A photograph of Lincoln, b/w, 1x1½ is imprinted to left of signature. Beneath the photograph is typed: "1948-Candidate for President./Appointed Chief Justice of U.S. Supreme/Court by President Eisenhower." Contrary to the caption, Earl Warren, although he had a keen ambition to become U.S. President, was not a candidate for the office in 1948. He was named to the 1948 Republican ticket as Thomas E. Dewey's running mate. The ticket lost to incumbent President Harry S Truman in a close contest. Warren thought about seeking the Party's presidential nomination in 1952, but popular war hero Dwight D. Eisenhower was chosen instead. In 1954, Eisenhower would appoint Warren as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Earl Warren (1891-1974) was Attorney General of California (1938-1942) before serving as Governor from 1942-1953. After becoming Chief Justice, he was immediately faced with the historic cases of Brown vs Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, and Warren worked to achieve unanimous decisions in favor of school desegregation "with all deliberate speed." The Warren Court was controversial for decisions which defined broadly the range of constitutionally protected civil rights and civil liberties. Warren retired in 1968 and died in 1974. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Staple holes at upper left blank edge, light transference of type at lower right blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
