EDWARD D. WHITE. TLS: "E.D. White" as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, ¼p, 5¼x6¾. Washington, D.C., 1912 November 2. To Mr. Sidney D. Alshuler, New York City. In full: "I am glad to comply with the request contained in your letter. Yours very truly." Edward Douglass White (1845-1921) was appointed an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1894-1910) by President Grover Cleveland. In 1910, he became the first southerner to head the Court since Roger Taney when he was appointed as the ninth Chief Justice by President William Howard Taft. White, who served as Chief Justice until his death in 1921, wrote the "rule of reason" decisions in the anti-trust cases involving the American Tobacco Co. and the Standard Oil in 1911 and the 1916 decision to uphold the Adamson Act, which gave railroad workers an eight-hour day. White, who had served in the Confederate army during the Civil War, had also been a U.S. Senator from Louisiana (1891-1894) prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court. Ink smudged at the "E" of signature. Lightly soiled, spots at blank right margin. Overall, fine condition.
