CHIEF JUSTICE FREDERICK M. VINSON
Fredrick M. Vinson signs a check to pay J. W. Elgin, General Agent $177.98.
Check signed: "Fred M. Vinson", 9x3¼. Louisa, Kentucky, 1924 January 8. Check No. 863 drawn on Vinson's account at the Louisa National Bank, payable to J. W. Elgin, General Agent for $177.98. Signed in the year he was elected to Congress for the first time. Frederick M. Vinson, a former U. S. Representative from Kentucky (1925-1929, 1931-1937), U.S. Circuit Court Judge (1937-1943) and Secretary of the Treasury (1945-1946), was appointed Chief Justice by President Truman in 1946, serving until his death in 1953. During his term, the Supreme Court rendered important civil liberty decisions. It ruled that the non-Communist statement required by the Taft-Hartley Act did not violate the Constitution (1950), that a speaker who displays "a clear and present danger" of incitement to riot can be arrested (1951) and that segregation is barred in interstate railway travel (1952). Lightly creased at upper right. Bank stamps, not at signature. Fine condition.
