FREDERICK M. VINSON
Fredrick M. Vinson signs a check to pay Lewis & Thos. Saltz, Inc. $105.50.
Partly Printed Check signed: "Fred M. Vinson" as Chief Justice, 8¼x3. Ashland, Kentucky, 1949 December 13. Check No. 249-49 drawn on Vinson's personal account at First National Bank of Louisa, Kentucky, payable to Lewis & Thos. Saltz, Inc. for $105.50. VINSON, a former U. S. Representative from Kentucky (1925-1929, 1931-1937), U.S. Circuit Court Judge (1937-1943) and Secretary of the Treasury (1945-1946), was appointed Chief Justice by President Truman in 1946, serving until his death in 1953. As Chief Justice, Vinson generally upheld governmental actions against civil liberties challenges. He had a mixed record on civil rights cases, and in 1952 hearings on the Brown v. Board of Education case appeared opposed to overruling the old "separate but equal" doctrine. After Vinson's death, the Court with Earl Warren as Chief Justice issued its landmark desegregation decision by a unanimous vote (1954). Normal bank holes and stamps, with one stamp covering "Fred" of (fully legible) signature. Overall, fine condition.
