Typed Letter Signed: "Fred M. Vinson" as Chief Justice,
1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1953 February 17. On letterhead of the
Supreme Court of the United States to Miss Dorothy Busby, History Department,
Henderson High School, Henderson, Texas. In full: "I am in receipt of
your letter of the 10th, and it gave me genuine pleasure to know that your
American history students viewed my work as they do. I am enclosing a thank you
note to them." [Thank you note not present.] Frederick M. Vinson, a
former U. S. Representative from Kentucky (1925-1929, 1931-1937), U.S. Circuit
Court Judge (1937-1943) and Secretary of the Treasury (1945-1946), was appointed
Chief Justice by President Truman in 1946, serving until his death in 1953.
During his term, the Supreme Court rendered important civil liberty decisions.
It ruled that the non-Communist statement required by the Taft-Hartley Act did
not violate the Constitution (1950), that a speaker who displays "a clear and
present danger" of incitement to riot can be arrested (1951) and that
segregation is barred in interstate railway travel (1952). Slightly creased.
Mounting remnant on verso shows through at upper left blank corner, staple holes
at upper right corner. Fine condition.
