HARLAN FISKE STONE
Inscribed photo in judicial robe, signed in 1934, when Stone was in the
Supreme Court minority which supported much of FDR's New Deal
legislation.
Photograph inscribed and signed as Associate Justice: "To Hon.
Allen F. Treadway./With regards and good wishes/Harlan F. Stone/Washington Jan.
15 -1934". Vintage b/w, 10¾x13½ overall, image 7x9 (one surface). Harlan Fiske
Stone(1872-1946) had decreased corruption in the Justice Department while
serving as United States Attorney General (1924-1925). As an Associate
Justice of the Supreme Court (1925-1941), he served under both William H. Taft
and Charles Evans Hughes. Although a Republican appointee, Stone had often
supported Franklin Roosevelt's "New Deal" legislation during Roosevelt's first
term, when many such measures were being declared unconstitutional by the
Court's majority. FDR nominated him for Chief Justice in 1941, and he filled
that role until his death. Scattered surface loss and scratches to image.
Some scattered light dings and soiling to borders. Otherwise, fine
condition.
