CHIEF JUSTICE HARLAN F. STONE - SUPREME COURT CARD SIGNED - HFSID 46873
Price: $650.00
HARLAN FISKE STONE.Supreme Court Card signed: "Harlan F. Stone", 4x2½.
Imprinted: "Supreme Court of the United States/Washington, D.C." Harlan Fiske Stone
(1872-1946) decreased corruption in the Justice Department while serving as U.S. Attorney
General (1924-1925). Appointed as an Associate Justice by President Calvin Coolidge,
Stone served for 16 years (1925-1941) before being appointed as the 12th Chief Justice of
the Supreme Court (1941-1946) by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Stone's greatest
contribution to the Court was his belief in judicial self-restraint; he felt that judicial review should
not be affected by the justices' personal views. Stone advocated freedom of expression,
opposed loyalty oaths and upheld state legislation -- providing it did not interfere with interstate
commerce. He also argued that application of the due process and equal protection clauses
should not be determined by economics but by civil rights and freedom of conscience. Slightly
creased at lower left blank corner. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 22¼x16¼.
